Putting Yourself First Isn't Selfish - It's Good Business! - Katenna Jones

Friday, October 7th, 9:15 am EST

YOU are the most important part of your behavior consulting services. Self-care is not something that should come when you have time or extra money, or the ideal client, it’s something that should be in place at all times in both our personal and in our business lives. In this session we will talk about finding balance between self-care and heartbreaking cases, being thorough as well as setting and maintaining boundaries with needy clients. It’s OK, and in fact better, to know your limitations rather than trying to be all things to all people. Trust me, I thought I was taking care of myself until I collapsed one morning and had a stroke.

3)     Apply an empathetic mindset and approach when working with clients who they identify as challenging or difficult.

4)     Consider their own boundary needs when working with clients who they identify as difficult.

Navigating high risk conversations with difficult clients - Erika Lessa

Friday, October 7th, 11:15 am EST

As professionals working with owners, we will inevitably be presented with situations that are  difficult to navigate. In this presentation we will look at ways we can first identify a “difficult client” and what might be creating the difficulty. Next, will be an exploration of what constitutes a high-risk conversation. The three specific content types we will be diving into include meeting the needs of a challenging dog, aversive training methods – both past uses and considerations for the future, and behavior euthanasia. Every owner with a behaviorally challenged dog will enter the working relationship in a different place. We know that dogs can not learn if they feel unsafe and the same is true for humans. As consultants, we need to be able to create an environment that is safe, non judgmental, and whole hearted to be effective.

Whether you’re new to working with clients or a veteran, certain scenarios can still make you cringe. The bickering couple. Clients who ignore your advice in favor of TikTok or YouTube. Those who have unrealistic expectations. And a personal favorite: the dreaded refund request. You don’t have to tie yourself up in knots when faced with difficult client situations. We’ll examine how to tackle them diplomatically, while setting realistic boundaries. You may find your most challenging customers become your greatest advocates!
